Storyboarding Process
So basically, when I'm storyboarding, each part has a purpose. For example, the current chapter's purpose involves bonding, the explanation of hookapoopalian, and further establishing of character through conflict. As long as those goals are met, the chapter can be written any which way. Each page also has a purpose. For example, the most recent page's purpose was to get the group to the inn and reestablish the pirates: their presence at the inn, and their respective personalities. As long as the storyboard accomplishes that purpose, it doesn't matter how it's done (as long as it's done well). For example:
But I decided this was badly done for a couple
reasons: Kexen's behavior was too wimpy, even for a dumb dorky scientist, and the pirates's conversation is redundant and doesn't need to be gone over again, even for recap. Typed dialogue, since my handwriting is terrible: Vajra: No, see... Kexen: ...That voice! The horror! Johnny: hmph. Sylth: Oh my. Vajra: ...You shouldn't press red flashing buttons labeled self-destruct to "see what will happen!" Johnny: The warning was next to the button! How was I supposed to know?! Vajra: You pushed all the buttons! At least one was bound to destroy the place! Ray: Kex? Kexen: They're the ones I told you about. The scary ones who destroyed my lab. Johnny: You know, I think you're just compensating for your--- For your... uh... Sylth: Claustrophobia? Johnny: Yeah! Vajra: *groan* Have you been teaching him new words? |
So, instead:
I changed the dialogue in the first two panels because it was dumb, but otherwise this was my final storyboard. Kexen's alarmed, but not wimpy, and the pirates's talk actually says something new: Vajra wants Kexen dead. Typed dialogue, since my handwriting is terrible: Kexen: yawn Johnny: Just stop Vajra: Lemme kill people Kexen: Let's leave Ray: Huh? Kexen: Those guys are bad news, believe me. Vajra: The more people we kill, the safer we are! Johnny: I am so done with you. |
Although the page is different, it still accomplishes its basic purpose. As long as you stick within those basic realms, it'll be fine. If you have a purpose for every piece, your story will flow smoothly.
That's about it for my storyboarding strategy! It's mostly just plotting things out, and making sure things happen when they need to. Hope you enjoyed! And look forward to an actual comic next week.

School's gotten really busy for me since I'm taking six classes, so I'm dropping to posting comics every other week. (Sorry!) But I'll be posting stuff about my process and how I actually make the comic, so if you're into that kind of thing check it out! And next Monday there will be a real comic. Look forward to it!
